Pinterest Perfection

I don’t often try things I find on Pinterest. I have a lot of my own projects and I find some of the stuff I find on there just silly. But there are some diamonds in the rough, like the absolutely brilliant idea of using magazine holders as shelving. A very simple project, and a good way to get this blog rolling again, I think.

I had a corner that needed a splash of color and a plant. So after a little Internet research, off I went to Ikea to get some sturdy magazine holders. I elected to go with the KNUFF wooden racks, which come two in a pack for $10. I went on this trip with my girlfriend who was also interested in corner shelves, so we got two packs. Continue reading

In which Duckie Constructs a Firepit

I love fires. I love the smell of burning leaves and the smoky smell that gets on you when sitting around one. I especially love hanging out with friends around one, making s’mores and chatting. So I decided that I wanted a firepit in my yard. And since I am me, I couldn’t just go buy one in the store. So I scoured the internet and found this beauty, which I had every intention of building (almost) per the instructions. But no matter where I looked, I could not find tree rings! So the project went on hold until this summer, when I started looking for other inexpensive fire pit ideas.

I posted on Freecycle, looking for free bricks to build a more traditional firepit with. I also added a line asking for curved, scalloped bricks but not expecting anyone to have them. Lo and behold, someone did! He had about 100 of these beauties in the back of his property, and I was free to take as many as I needed.

Back to the Future

Hello all! It has been a while!! How y’all doing?

The last few months has been full a lot of boring, non-crafty, non-home improvement stuff. Stuff has been done, such as repainting the downstairs bathroom hallway so it was no longer pink, but not much of it. That job did get rid of all the pink in the house though!! Well, except the basement floor, but that doesn’t count because it is unfinished. (Yes, the painted the basement FLOOR pink as well…) Other than that, I have been doing a lot of gardening in the front of the house and a lot of work outside of the house. Once I finish the large garden project I am working on now, I promise to get pictures up here!!

To tide you over, here is a pic of the first blooms on my Black-eyed Susans, the official state flower of Maryland.

Spring has Sprung!

It has been a while since I posted, but I haven’t been lazy. No, no! Just a bit slow on posting. Like a lot of the rest of the country, Maryland was hit hard by the polar vortex. Even this Monday, three days before spring was about to start, we had a snowstorm that dropped 8″ on us. Boo snow! It has made getting ready for spring a bit hard, though I have been doing my best.

I will buy you a garden, where your flowers can bloom…

It’s been a while since I posted. Mostly because it has been really cold and busy in the duckpond over the last month or so. In February, I had two snow days and had to shovel out my driveway about five times in those two days. I have also been busy with non-house projects, including sewing, crafting and working on a routine and costume for my first burlesque routine I am doing in April. Whew!

Amongst all the snow and cold, I have been starting to get ready for the growing season here. According to the Farmer’s Almanac, my area of Maryland has a 200-day growing season. So lots that can be done! Although the last frost according to this source is not until April 11, I am starting to get stuff ready, including infrastructure improvements and seed-starting.

A Bit of Victoriana

I have said before that I have a thing for Victorian home decor. I plan to dedicate my front room (which I call The Library) to this look. While I am still searching for the perfect fainting couch and side table, I have found some lighting. Through eBay I found a great lamp for said side table that is bronze and silver and very period-looking. I also found the perfect light fixture. While snowed in today, I put it up.

Waiting for Spring

Baltimore is starting to thaw out from the ridiculously cold weather we had last week. With the help of contractor’s plastic on my windows and sleeping on my couch near the fireplace, I managed not to freeze any of my extremities off. While spring is still quite a ways away, I am slowly starting to get ready for it, as it will need a great deal of prep.
