Pinterest Perfection

I don’t often try things I find on Pinterest. I have a lot of my own projects and I find some of the stuff I find on there just silly. But there are some diamonds in the rough, like the absolutely brilliant idea of using magazine holders as shelving. A very simple project, and a good way to get this blog rolling again, I think.

I had a corner that needed a splash of color and a plant. So after a little Internet research, off I went to Ikea to get some sturdy magazine holders. I elected to go with the KNUFF wooden racks, which come two in a pack for $10. I went on this trip with my girlfriend who was also interested in corner shelves, so we got two packs. Continue reading

Back to the Future

Hello all! It has been a while!! How y’all doing?

The last few months has been full a lot of boring, non-crafty, non-home improvement stuff. Stuff has been done, such as repainting the downstairs bathroom hallway so it was no longer pink, but not much of it. That job did get rid of all the pink in the house though!! Well, except the basement floor, but that doesn’t count because it is unfinished. (Yes, the painted the basement FLOOR pink as well…) Other than that, I have been doing a lot of gardening in the front of the house and a lot of work outside of the house. Once I finish the large garden project I am working on now, I promise to get pictures up here!!

To tide you over, here is a pic of the first blooms on my Black-eyed Susans, the official state flower of Maryland.

A Bit of Victoriana

I have said before that I have a thing for Victorian home decor. I plan to dedicate my front room (which I call The Library) to this look. While I am still searching for the perfect fainting couch and side table, I have found some lighting. Through eBay I found a great lamp for said side table that is bronze and silver and very period-looking. I also found the perfect light fixture. While snowed in today, I put it up.

Quick Bathroom Makeover

Last night and this morning I was busy painting my upstairs bathroom. While I am a all for the new and modern, I am a huge fan of the vintage. My love of Victorian aesthetics, my interest in burlesque and my obsession with the kitsch play into how I am decorating my home.

Although not a selling point like the huge kitchen and the fireplace, I fell in love with my upstairs bathroom as soon as I saw it. It is full of 50’s adorableness. The black and white tiles on the floors and walls were just perfect.

Yay plants!

It has been three weeks since I moved into my house and I have gotten a decent amount of stuff done. Not as much as I thought I would, but more than a little. I have painted, organized, unpacked and started to settle. My entire kitchen is unpacked and functional things are starting to fall into place. After my last post, I realized that everything can’t get done overnight, especially when two out of the last three weeks I have been away on trips and the next few weeks promise the same. Slow and steady wins the race, right? It’s not like I am going anywhere. I plan to settle and dig my heels in deep.

In the tumult of all of this though, I decided that small decorative projects do not have to wait until the big ones are done. So I made a plant shelf. Yay plants! I love having plants around the house. There is a nice wide window sill in my kitchen that has several on it, but with the curtains. I cannot see them. The three-pane kitchen window also did not have blinds on them and I did not want to put any up. So, to kill two birds with one stone, I made a plant shelf to put over the cafe curtains.

$9 of burlap + $3 of lace + 45 minutes = New Curtains for my office!

I have not sewed anything in about three weeks. This was unacceptable.

I went out in search of a curtain rod and curtains for the back room/office. I wanted something that would let the light in while giving me privacy. I did not see anything I liked in the length I needed (around 40″), so I wandered into the fabric section of Walmart, which I have such a love-hate relationship with. I love it because I can get everything I need in one fell swoop, but I hate the ethics of the company.

Anyway…
